Snatch: The Adventures of David & Me in Old New York is Volume 1 of a three volume series of young adult novels written by Pulitzer Prize winning Screenwriter and playwright Charles Fuller.
Mr. Fuller is working on ONE NIGHT… a new play commissioned by Cherry Lane Theatre in New York with an opening in the Fall of 2012.
In 2006 A Soldier’s Play, for which Mr. Fuller received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, was remounted at the Second Stage Theatre in New York. Written by Charles Fuller and Directed by Norman Jewison, the film A Soldier’s Story, was produced by Columbia Pictures and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture and Best Screenplay in 1985. The drama focuses on the conflicts of race, socio-economic status and the fulfillment of dreams.
In 2009 Zooman And The Sign was part of a series of plays from the Negro Ensemble Company mounted at the Signature Theatre in New York.
Over the last 10 years Mr. Fuller has also been actively involved in the Theatre mentoring young playwrights.
Mr. Fuller’s interest in writing was first sparked when he and his best-friend Larry Neal, discovered there were no books in their high school library written by African-American authors. It was only a matter of time before he was trying to write his first novel. Mr. Fuller began writing plays in the mid-sixties and soon went on to co-found the Afro-American Arts Theatre in his native Philadelphia. Some of his earlier plays include: THE VILLAGE: A PARTY produced by Princeton’s McArthur Theatre in 1968, and later produced in New York Off-Broadway as THE PERFECT PARTY. THE CANDIDATE, produced by Woody King at Henry Street Settlement’s Theatre in New York, 1974. It was in New York that Mr. Fuller’s association with the Negro Ensemble Company began. He wrote IN THE DEEPEST PART OF SLEEP, produced in 1974 — THE BROWNSVILLE RAID, produced in 1976, and ZOOMAN AND THE SIGN, produced in 1979 — which won Mr. Fuller and Obie Award for Best Play in 1980. A SOLDIER’S PLAY was produced in 1981 and won Mr. Fuller the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1982, the New York Critics Award for Best American Play, and the Edgar Alan Poe Award for Best Mystery.
In 1985 , Mr. Fuller wrote the screenplay, The Sky Is Gray for the American Short Story series aired on PBS. In 1987 Mr. Fuller wrote the screenplay for the film A Gathering Of Old Men which was produced and aired by CBS Television in 1989-90.
Since then he has written a number of screenplays. In 1996-7, Zooman, based on Mr. Fuller’s play ZOOMAN AND THE SIGN was produced and aired by the Showtime Networks. Mr. Fuller’s drama, The Badge part of an anthology THE WALL which was directed by Joe Sargent for Showtime Networks and aired in 1998.
Mr. Fuller then wrote and produced Love Songs, a made for TV Movie for Showtime Networks which premiered and aired in 1999-2000 and continues to be part of Showtime’s and Hallmark’s schedule. He is a member of the Writers Guild of America and Board Member of the Dramatists Guild Fund. He continues to urge his audience to reject old images and stereotypes in order to accept more realistic Black characters.
